The University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Transplant Institute was awarded a five-year, $19.5 million, grant  to accelerate research that will hopefully lead to genetically modified kidney transplants.

  • Ranked 31st in Life Science R&D Expenditures
  • 2020 Total NIH funding: $325,573,502
  • The UAB Antiviral Drug Discovery and Development Center received $7.4 million from the NIH in 2021, to develop potential new drugs to treat infections such as West Nile and Dengue.  The Center has received over $22M in NIH funding since 2019.

  • The UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science received over $9M in 2021 from the NIH.  The Center has received over $26M in NIH funding since 2019.

  • The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center received a $5.1M support grant in 2021 from the NIH.  The Center has received over $183M in NIH funding since 1985.
